Zero Waste - the financial and the environmental struggle
In december 2016 I clicked on a TED Talk. It was held by Bea Johnson on TEDxMünster. She made me think. I was raised to be environmental- aware, thanks to my father. That was the very first time when I met this movement. The 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot... but how?
As most of you, I also live in a big city. My everydays contains a lots of trash. At first I thought that is not bad, as I have tried to chose the eco products before the video as well. Met the ads of the menstrual cup, etc... After I heard Johnson talk I sat down, and made a list. What do I do? How bad am I harming? Is this really doable? Can I go no waste?
Let me break this, I am not living a zero waste lifestyle. But I do live (or trying to) like a minimalist. This does not mean, that my flat looks like one of the japaneese ones.
I do have objects. I have clothes. I have furniture.
But I also got rid of a bunch of stuff. And each time, when I go out, I consider. If I go for a drink I rather choose a beer in the bottle. Or a drink without a straw.
If I need a new thing to wear, first I go through my old stuff first. Surprisingly usually I have found a lots of new pieces to wear. If not then I would pay a visit in a second hand shop.
I do cook more. I am using public transport, or going by bike, or useing a ecar sharing service. Thankfully my city have a lots of opportunity to be environmental friendly.
Did I choose this only to became less harm to our Mother Nature?
I would love to answer yes, but no. I did this to became more aware of my money. Where do I spend it how. To live a good life, have more quality in it. We humans are selfish, and the comfort is everything. I did became a minimalist/zero waste trying person for comfort reasons. To have better skin, to be healthier, to have a shinier hair, to have more money.
You know what, I am not a minimalist. I just choose to be conscious. Simple is that, I am aware the responsibilty of my choices.
Did you know, that Zara customers found notes in their newly bought clothing pieces? Because the workers who's sallary is lower than you could imagine got not paid. Did you know, that H&M burns unbought clothes? Around 12M tonns per year only in Sweden? And also they present a new collection almost each month? Did you ever asked yourself why do you need those things?
If you look around, what do you see? What are you missing?
I would like to encourage everyone to be mor conscius of your choices. Go and buy your food at the market. Not because it is trendy, or because this way you will encourage local tradings but because it is cheeper, and the people you will meet there will make you smile. Because it's feel good.
Try the 30 days clothing challange: try to not buy anything for 30 days. You will realize, that you do not need to.
Simply, don't let to fool yourself. In this way, believe me, we got the power to change the market, and also save our planet. We do not need to be so radical as a zero waste. Just think how did your grandparents lived. What did they do? You will save money and time and you are going to feel better.
