News Feeds in the Next Generation

Lately I have realised something. We turn a blind eye to actual news to let ourselves be swept away with the incredible amount of unnecessary unimportant "news" coming from the social media platforms. I have been part of the problem - I admit - following pages like Glamour or Buzzfeed. Which are not a bad sites, quite good actually for entertainment. Buzzfeed even makes an effort to discuss current problems sometimes...

But while they are quite good, they are better at distracting from what is really important with test about your personality and "future predictions" than making you face what is really important and what you should take your time and read. And this is how the news feed of social media platforms are filled with these instead of these:
Aka an event that might not be important to you, but still never the less: news.
This is obviously not true for every person. Many of us follow news portals like CNN, BBC, or whatever that is regional and relevant to us. However I can't be the only one that started to notice something: pages like Buzzfeed post way more, therefore appear way more and you read them more. That is because they address the audiences that are most active on social media: Millenials.

Yes, yes.. we are the start of every problem. Or are we? These websites do not commercial themselves as news feeds. They are but simple entertainment platforms. However they are so popular because they get a person's mind of everyday troubles. But at the same time they post issues about modern day society, sneaking a little bit of information about today's world including Politics, Religion, Sexuality, Human Rights, Feminism, Racism... all that shabang that we often chose to turn a blind eye to and just scroll past when they appear on a news platform. And I personally do this because often I am not sure how corrupt a certain news platform is. As much as they should stay impartial in every aspect, they rarely do. Mainly due to ownership of the platform.

Is Buzzfeed impartial? Probably not. I mean they spent way more time dissing about Donald Trump than anything. He is just a man the media loves to hate. But as much as I am against online bullying the poor man could really use a media advisor that helps him go over speeches and interviews before they happen, because the ridicule he faces as much as his fault as the person's who is posting it. But we will return to Donald in another post... probably.

But pages like Buzzfeed are not just a platform used by millenials. They have many readers who are minors as well. Therefore I believe that having a news section is a very good idea and even if not remaining partial they do post current events that are seen by many generations - and they react to it. I believe these news sections should however be more throughout and include international news so that it is not just us, Europeans that get to read about the US leadership and their take on it, but the US youth could also read about international news in a matter that captures their attention and shows them an angle on the world they wouldn't see nor search for otherwise.

Let's be honest here: teens rarely research the current events unless they have a paper due on it tomorrow. And that should be changed. The more the younger generations know about the world, the better. We are talking about the next neuroscientists, astronauts, researchers, doctors, CEOs, lawyers, engineers and who else knows what. These people should know about what is out there and not just only when they are rich enough to travel.

And that is my take on News Feeds in the Next Generation.
